Charity Leisure Management Company Soll Leisure, who manages Park Club sites in Oxfordshire, Kent and Hampshire, is supporting local talented athletes to reach full potential in their sport through the Active Star scheme.
Charity leisure management company Soll Leisure have launched an Active Star Scheme that provides sports people of a national standard free access to sports facilities at Soll Leisure and Park Club sites. Elite sports people, including those with disabilities, can access swimming, gym and exercise classes to assist them in reaching full potential in their sport, and to prepare them for any upcoming competitions / championships.
Active Star member Lauren Summers used the facilities at Wantage Leisure Centre to prepare for her most recent competition in the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships, representing Great Britain. The lead up to the championships involved 7 months of intense training, and Lauren is extremely grateful for the support from Soll Leisure which also helped her to gain the award for ‘Best Player’ for Great Britain. Lauren said, “The training involved has been extremely demanding and without the support of Wantage Leisure Centre I would not have been able to achieve what I have this year”.

Gymnast Ben Goodall began participating in gymnastics at the age of 6 using Willowbrook Leisure Centre, and has most recently been selected to represent Great Britain’s Tumbling team at the Loulé World Cup in Portugal this September. His skill and hard work has enabled him to progress his performance to Club, County, Regional and National level in 3 Gymnastic disciplines of Tumbling, Trampolining and Men’s Artistic.
As part of the Active Star scheme Ben has been using Wantage Leisure Centre to help improve his fitness and says, “It makes a big difference being able to train for free at Wantage Leisure Centre a couple of times a week as part of the Active Star scheme, with the rest of my training taking place in Milton Keynes and Wakefield. Since starting to use the gym at Wantage Leisure Centre I've made some really good gains in strength and power and it’s definitely paying off by improving my performance”.
This was demonstrated when Ben won a Gold medal in the British Tumbling Spring Event and has led to a career high by qualifying for the Great Britain squad for the World Cup in September. . With more time developing his fitness at Wantage Leisure Centre and on the tumble track Ben is hoping to reach the peak of his ability in time for the upcoming Word Cup in Portugal. Ben said,‘After 9 years of training and competing in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, Tumbling and Trampolining I am hoping that 2014 will be a big year for me.
I am really excited about representing Great Britain in September’. The Active Star scheme is currently supporting sports people in a variety of different sports, including Swimming, Ice Hockey, Karate, Long Distance Running and Gymnastics. Community Development Manager for Soll Leisure, Richard Claydon, said “We are delighted that our Active Star scheme has produced such great results for local sports people. Ben has used Soll Leisure centres from the age of 6 to help improve his performance and we’re very excited to see all the progress he has made’.
Soll Leisure continues to do work with numerous partners, aiming to increase participation in sport and exercise. These initiatives focus on fitness levels from sedentary adults and children, to elite sports performers and provide a great opportunity to engage with local communities.
